Em American History X - em português América Proibida - a história é contada do ponto de vista de um neo-nazi essencialmente em três momentos da sua vida, aquele em que se torna líder de um grupo de jovens racistas - skin heads - até ao ponto em que é preso, o seu tempo na prisão em que vai mudando de atitude e finalmente a saída, após três anos, em liberdade condicional, quando tenta salvar o seu irmão de percorrer o mesmo caminho e proteger a família. A progressão temporal não é linear o que de certa forma aumenta o valor e o interesse de cada parte da história. Esta personagem principal, Derek Vineyard - interpretada genialmente por Edward Norton -, está muito bem desenvolvida e permite uma observação interessante do pensamento e da dialéctica racista. A sua progressão ao longo da história é credível e chama à atenção para comportamentos que é importante conhecer e analisar como o são a liderança e o recrutamento de membros para o seu gang/exército. As restantes personagens têm um papel puramente de suporte, fornecendo o contexto e algumas motivações para o que Derek vai pensando e fazendo, não passando em si mesmas de simples clichés.
De notar que o filme mostra muita violência, por vezes ao ponto de dar vontade de virar a cara ou tapar os olhos, mas que sem dúvida faz sentido nesta história e nesta temática, de forma que em momento algum senti que fosse gratuita ou exagerada.
O meu maior problema com América Proibida consiste nas justificações das mudanças de Derek, demasiado simplistas e típicas, primeiro a morte do pai que parece ser a força motriz para os comportamentos racistas iniciais, depois o seu sofrimento e vontade de proteger a família que o fazem mudar de atitude e criticar as suas acções anteriores e aqueles que assim continuam. Há no entanto duas situações a este nível que merecem destaque pela positiva, tanto pela forma credível como foram apresentadas como pelo interesse para a temática do racismo e dos gangs: a relação de amizade que Derek consegue estabelecer com um prisioneiro negro e a figura de Cam, um nazi mais velho que influencia nos bastidores a criação e gestão destes exércitos de skin heads.
Assim, considero American History X um muito bom filme, daqueles que vale a pena ver, rever e deixar-se ficar a pensar.

This is a film that tries to tackle a very important but also very complex issue. It's probably impossible to handle all of what can be said on racism, on why people feel it, on why they act on it and how they choose how they act.
In American History X, we are shown the point of view of a neo-nazi. We are shown, in a non linear time scrambling way, his change first towards neo-nazism, then his slow and doubtful turning back from it. I think the main character was well built - Edward Norton is marvellous as Derek Vineyard - and the depiction of the racist thought and dialectic are well put. The rest of the characters are mostly supportive, providing context and motive for the main one, showing nothing beyond the clichés. Derek's transformation into a leader and his recruitment process in order to organize his gang/army were also well developed. There is also a lot of violence in the film, sometimes making you really want to turn your face from the screen, but by no means over the top or beyond what makes sense in this context.
My biggest grudge with American History X are the reasons given for Derek's actions, far too simple and typical, the father killed driving him towards racism and then his own suffering and the will to protect his family causing his repent and changed behaviour. The two good things here are the development of a friendly relationship between him and a black man in prison and the noted smooth background influence of an older nazi first on him and then his brother.
All in all a very good film, worth rewatching and thinking about for a while.
