La Cage Dorée by Ruben Alves

A Gaiola Dourada foi uma óptima surpresa. O filme é um retrato do que tem sido a vida dos emigrantes portugueses daquela geração, trazido por um realizador que notoriamente conhece esta realidade de perto. O que resulta disto é uma visão inteligente dos costumes e dos problemas comuns a muitas das pessoas naquela situação disfarçada de filme cómico que leva a audiência à gargalhada vezes sem conta.
A nível de temática, quero destacar a referência ao preconceito xenófobo para com os imigrantes, a despreocupação com as suas condições de vida e trabalho, a sua tendencial invisibilidade no meio da sociedade a que acabam por pertencer, o seu isolamento cultural, que os torna simultaneamente diferentes dos que ficaram em Portugal e dos franceses que os rodeiam.
Apesar de por vezes haver uma caricaturização exagerada dos emigrantes, o filme não chega a um tom de gozo que o torne desagradável. Para além disso, o facto de haver ao mesmo tempo piadas dirigidas aos portugueses e aos franceses também elimina algum mau-estar que pudesse provocar numa audiência lusa.
Os actores estiveram em geral muito bem e continuarei fã da Rita Blanco, como já previa.
Apesar das gargalhadas e da boa disposição que esta presente em todo o filme, não consegui deixar de ficar a pensar na situação destes trabalhadores, que a sociedade finge esquecer para não ter que se preocupar com os seus salários e com a sua qualidade de vida, ao mesmo tempo que reconhece que o seu papel é essencial para o funcionamento da nossa civilização.

A minha única crítica negativa vai para o aparecimento no final do Pauleta, que foi desnecessário e não teve qualquer relevância nem sequer piada.

La Cage Dorée (The Gilded Cage) was an awesome surprise. The film is a portrayal of how the life of Portuguese emigrants of that generation in France has been, brought by a director that evidently knows this reality closely. This originates an intelligent view of the typical habits and problems of people in that situation while allowing for a comedic disguise that had the whole audience laughing out loud.
The film approaches multiple themes, such as prejudice and xenophobia towards immigrants, the lack of preoccupation with their work conditions, their trend towards social invisibility, their cultural isolation that turns them into a group at the same time different from the French that surround them and from the Portuguese that didn't emigrate.
Although the caricaturization is sometimes exaggerated, the film doesn't feel over the top or insulting. Besides, the fact that it makes fun of both Portuguese and French helps to placate any possible offence when viewed by the Portuguese public.
The acting was overall very good and I'll keep on being a fan of Rita Blanco.
In spite of all the laughing and cheerfulness throughout the film, I couldn't avoid leaving with a lingering thought about the situation of these emigrant workers, that the society pretends to forget in order to be able to ignore their low payment, their lack of quality of life, even while it can't escape recognizing their essential role in keeping civilization working as it does.
My one negative criticism goes towards Pauleta's unnecessary cameo in the ending, both irrelevant and not really funny at all.
